DD Gift List: coloring books!

As a blogger, apparently I’m required to crank out a gift list for my vast and devoted following. But who has the time for that? I’ve got diapers to change! However, I thought coloring books would probably be the most appropriate gift for Designer Daddy to recommend, so here a few fun I found poking around the interwebs:

For the ‘Lil Hipster:
INDIE ROCK COLORING BOOK

The Shins, Broken Social Science, Bloc Party, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, MGMT, LCD Soundsystem and a slew of other bands too cool to be covered on “Glee” contribute their names to this whimsical collection. The book, described as “an interactive and colorful journey of creativity, artistic expression, music, and charity” is produced by the Yellow Bird Project. This Montreal-based organization sells this and other band-related products, with all the proceeds going to the charity of the band’s choice. 32 pages, $10.00

For the Nihilist:
THE POLAR BEARS – A COLOURING AND ACTIVITY BOOK
This would be more of a New Year’s gift, as they’re a (white) hot item and sold out until January. This absence-of-color coloring book comes courtesy of the Toronto Zoo (hence the “u” in “colouring”), full of mostly-white pages that “provide for some imaginative activities.” Comes with 5 crayons — snowball, polar, frost, igloo and Arctic. Seriously. 20 page, $6.99

For the JD:
WALLS NOTEBOOK

For those that color outside the lines law. Filled to the brim with photos of blank urban walls, subway cars, etc, just waiting to be tagged in the safety of your home. This set (from Uncommon Goods) comes with 10 dual-tip, thick-and-thin markers. Bail money not included. Ages 12+, 160 pages, $25.00

For the Fame Whore:
ANDY WARHOL COLORING BOOK
Perfect for the budding celebrity disguised as a fine artist. Or vice versa. Explores the artist’s styles and techniques, without all the blow and loud disco music. Also available from the same publisher: Dali, Van Gogh, Klee, Klimt, Kandinsky, Monet, Hopper, and coming soon – Miró. Ages 6+, 32 pages, $8.95

For the Eco-friendly, Socially Responsible, Monk-in-training:
NEPAL COLORING BOOK – COLORING ABOVE THE CLOUDS

Constructed from handmade lokta paper in Nepal, this is a PC dream. Replete with cloud-covered mountains, yaks, and prayer flags, this coloring book may be a little high-minded for some, but you can’t get any more educational and sustainable than this. $12.00

BONUS – For the Sweet Tooth:
PAINTERZ MOUTH COLORING BUBBLE GUM
Don’t like books, but still like to color? Then color your mouth with these EXTREME (note the “z” in the name) gumballs! From the makers of Double Bubble, these little orbs of tongue dye come in a “myriad of funky colors” including: Bangin’ Blue, Grippin’ Green (what exactly is it gripping?), Epic Orange, Midnight Black and Ragin’ Red. Mix them all together to create Cardboard Box Brown! Bucket of 244 individually-wrapped pieces, $17.99

Do you have any favorite coloring books, either ones you’ve bought for your child or from your own youth?
