Defying Hail Hydra

April 15, 2014 | By Brent Almond | POP CULTURE

I finally saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier last weekend, but cut me some slack, because babysitters are expensive! I also finally saw Wicked a few weeks ago. Cut me some slack again, because… well, I don’t deserve any for that one. I’m a bad, bad gay.

After seeing the former, the “Hail Hydra” meme finally made sense. (Who knew Garry Shandling could get any creepier?) And then I remembered the latter, and realized that no one (that I could find) had done this…

Happy Tuesday. You’re welcome.

And oh yeah, Hail Hydra.

Wanting to solve the mystery of this post will still not get me to go to see Wicked. I just don’t want to. Fortunately I still have my Gay Card from my time in Italy. As long as I never return to Italy, it can’t be revoked.

Brent — When I was working in Catania, I was only able to find one gay club there – Circo Pegaso – which was in an actual one-ring circus tent and located over by the lido. In order to gain admission, I had to have an ArciGay card (€45, if I remember correctly). And, as the concept of the gay bear had not quite yet reached Sicily, I had to convince them I was actually gay. So, it’s not so much that I got the credits as it was that I actually got the card! An actual gay card! I still have it somewhere… You may be remembering this story now because after that particular trip, I would tell anyone who would listen all about my gay card.

And, since I have now publicly claimed that I will do not want to nor will I ever see Wicked, I’m a little fearful of returning to Italy since it’s quite possible that the carabinieri at the airport will ask for my card back. And they’ll have to pry it out of my hands to get it back.
