Defying Hail Hydra

April 15, 2014 | By Brent Almond | QUICKPIC

I finally saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier last weekend, but cut me some slack, because babysitters are expensive! I also finally saw Wicked a few weeks ago. Cut me some slack again, because… well, I don’t deserve any for that one. I’m a bad, bad gay.

After seeing the former, the “Hail Hydra” meme finally made sense. (Who knew Garry Shandling could get any creepier?) And then I remembered the latter, and realized that no one (that I could find) had done this…

Happy Tuesday. You’re welcome.

And oh yeah, Hail Hydra.

SuperLunchNotes: Fire Week!

April 8, 2014 | By Brent Almond | SUPERLUNCHNOTES

In case you’re new here and wondering “WTF are ‘SuperLunchNotes?’” Well, my son started preschool last year, and every day I’ve put a note in his lunch bag featuring a doodle of a superhero. You can check a bunch more by visiting the SuperLunchNotes category on this site, or follow me on Instagram @SuperLunchNotes, where I post them daily!

Is it hot in here, or is it just me? Welcome to FIRE WEEK!!!

WEEK 34: Mar 31 – Apr 4, 2014

Firestorm: 3.31.14

SuperLunchNotes: Bird Week!

March 31, 2014 | By Brent Almond | SUPERLUNCHNOTES

In an attempt to bring forth Spring, last week I doodled a flock of super-powered avian adventurers. Yet as I’m typing this, snow is falling. AGAIN. Guess I’ll have to up my game for next week… In the mean time, take a gander at these guys and gals (and ducks) and be sure and Tweet them to all your fine-feathered friends.

WEEK 33: Mar 24 – Mar 28, 2014

Raven: 3.24.14

The kiddo and I have been binge-watching Teen Titans Go! lately. I always found Raven a bit annoying in the comics, but I dig her slacker/goth vibe in this iteration. Favorite episode is “Meatball Party,” where Raven becomes annoyed at Cyborg’s unending enthusiasm and devours the whole team with the demon tentacles living in her chipped tooth. Typical.

SuperLunchNotes: Umm… Full Face Mask Week?

March 24, 2014 | By Brent Almond | DESIGNER DADDY, SUPERLUNCHNOTES

This past week was kind of all over the place. By Sunday night I knew Monday would be yet ANOTHER FRAKKING SNOW DAY, and Thursday was an already planned school closing for “teacher inservice” — which I think is just teachers sleeping in. Not that they don’t deserve it, but let’s just call it what it is.

So on Tuesday I cranked out an Iron Man and figured this would just be a short week of random, non-connected notes. But I came to realize I couldn’t NOT do a theme. After finally doing the oft-requested Lord O’ The Sith, I considered “Armor Week” for a bit — but I needed a DC character, and only Thor or Rhino came to mind. Then I noticed both Stark and Skywalker also have creepy eye slits in common, and landed on the Full Face Mask theme. Weak, I know, but still pretty cute I thought. Okay, creepy cute.

WEEK 32: Mar 18 – Mar 21, 2014

Iron Man: 3.18.14

Can I tell you how hard it was to not have Iron Man say “TALK TO THE HAND?” But then I pictured JJ running around school throwing shade and thought better of it.

SuperLunchNotes: Week 3

March 3, 2014 | By Brent Almond | DESIGNER DADDY, SUPERLUNCHNOTES

My only regret about these early weeks of SuperLunchNotes was the bad lighting and soft focus filter I put on them. What is this, Prince of Tides?

WEEK 3: Aug 26 – Aug 30, 2013

Krypto: 8.26.13

SuperLunchNotes: Week 2

February 18, 2014 | By Brent Almond | DESIGNER BABY, SUPERLUNCHNOTES

These notes from week 2 are so simple they look like they were done years ago (by a 6 year-old) instead of months ago, yet they look more spontaneous than some of what I’m doing now. I need to do notes like these more often…

WEEK 2: Aug 19 – Aug 23, 2013

This one was a favorite as soon as I finished it. The Penguin’s goofy proportions, tiny umbrella and the little rain drops  crack me up. And I got to use my purple Sharpie!

The Penguin: 8.19.13

SuperLunchNotes: MONSTER WEEK!

February 12, 2014 | By Brent Almond | DESIGNER DADDY, SUPERLUNCHNOTES

I was thinking I’d probably save Monster Week for Halloween, but that’s a long way away, and JJ had rediscovered the cheesy late-70s Godzilla cartoons on Hulu. I say “rediscovered” because he’d devoured them all about a year earlier when they were on Netflix. If you’ve never seen it, at the very least you need to check out the epic theme song. At that age it must be fun for everything to be brand new about every six months!

There were a bevvy of monsters to choose from, so I’m sure I’ll be able to do a sequel down the road with Mssrs. Cookie, Grouch and Sully, among others. However, I draw the line at Godzooky. What a tool.

WEEK 26: Feb 3 – Feb 7, 2014

Godzilla: 2.3.14

#SuperMilkMan to the Rescue!

August 25, 2013 | By Brent Almond | DESIGNER DADDY, FRIDGE WISDOM

As a marketing/design professional and an admitted non-sports fan, the commercials truly ARE my favorite part of the Super Bowl. And last year’s big game featured an awesomely over-the-top spot from the Milk folks featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Here’s a refresher:

In addition to all the humor, action and special-effects a Super Bowl spot requires, it also showcases the rarely-seen kick-ass Dad (or perhaps the most muscle-bound manny of all time) blowing off helpless kitties, banks being robbed, frightened old ladies, escaped circus lions and an alien invasion, all to provide the much-needed protein and essential nutrients for the munchkins in his charge.

As a follow up, The Rock appears in a new print campaign for Milk, continuing his portrayal of a super milk-powered hero, AKA #SuperMilkMan! He’s finally back to help out that poor, tree-stranded kitty:

You might be thinking, Okayyy, milk’s great and all. But… whatthehuh?

Well, the fellows at Life of Dad helped Milk rustle up 25 dad bloggers to be Milk Ambassadors, to create an original video promoting Milk’s new ad campaign, and possibly win a trip to either LA or New York to meet The Rock* himself! And yup, I’m one of those 25 Official Entrants!

And here’s my video! Keep in mind the budget was much lower, but my costar is way cuter than a stupid cat:

So, for the love of all that is whole or skim, please tweet, share, like, twerk, etc. this post and the video so I win that trip to LA (I’ve been to NYC, so fingers crossed for Hollywood) and my son gets to meet a darn-near, real-life superhero!

Never-before-seen storyboard sketches:

Behind-the-scenes celebrity gossip:
During this shoot, the antagonist (Energetic Toddler, played by JJ) — for the first time in his career life — refused to go outside to do the action scenes. He had to be bribed with a snack, a superhero toy, and of course a cold glass of milk. Truly a star in the making.

Exclusive Designer Daddy contest offer:
In the comments, name your favorite way to enjoy milk AND your favorite movie starring Dwayne Johnson/The Rock for a chance to win a custom pair of gauntlets, just like those worn by #SuperMilkMan! Contest ends midnight 9/6/13.

*Don’t tell anyone, but I’d be just as happy with a pair of those rockin’ space-themed pajama pants… Or more specifically, an XXL for me, L for Papa, and a kid’s size 4 for JJ. Just sayin’.

Fridge Wisdom: Baby on Borg

May 16, 2013 | By Brent Almond | FRIDGE WISDOM

I’ve had this one in the queue for a long time. Because it keeps being true. But there’s a new Star Trek movie coming out, so I figure now’s as good a time as any to drop this bit of Fridge Wisdom.

TODDLERS ARE LIKE THE BORG. Whatever you throw at them, they adapt, reconfigure their circuitry, then come at you full strength with a whole new arsenal. READ FULL ARTICLE >>

A long time ago in a gallery far, far away….

May 3, 2013 | By Brent Almond | DADDY LIKE

Happy May the Fourth from Designer Daddy!

Concepción Studios is a California-based graphic design studio that specializes in vintage-style prints, posters and photographs for its music industry clients. They’ve worked with the likes of Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga, MUSE and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, merging 60s-style design with contemporary irony and whimsy.

Yet it’s the studio’s Etsy store that drew my attention on this most blessed of holidays. The shop features, among other things, an out-of-this-world collection of Star Wars-inspired prints. Let’s take a stroll through the gallery, shall we?…

My favorite is this set of Princess Leia and Han Solo silhouettes. Click to enlarge and read the obvious, yet hilarious, captions.
