Super Lunch Notes Fly Across the Internet and Around the World

To say the last week has been a whirlwind would be an understatement. Perhaps a cyclone of sticky notes would be more fitting. Or a maelstrom of media. An avalanche of exposure? All would apply.

It started last Sunday, when SuperLunchNotes were featured on BuzzFeed. My Instagram account swelled from around 1,000 followers to over 5,500 in a 24-hour period. Cousins and contractors and parents from preschool all mentioned they’d seen my Post-It Note doodles on the site famous for its listicles and soul-probing surveys.

Further living up to its name, the BuzzFeed attention brought in Monday morning calls that turned into articles appearing on the web sites of both The Today Show and Good Morning America.

In the following day or two, things hopped across the pond, where the lunch notes popped up on Huffington Post UK, iVillage, Daily Mail and Mirror. My notes were scattered here and there around the blogosphere — Cool Mom Picks, Hello Giggles, The Bump, and Bustle among them.

Around mid-week, I was contacted by a producer from Australia’s Today show — they wanted to have me and Jon on for a live segment of their popular morning show. Crikey!

So a few days later, after a couple of fresh haircuts and some question-prepping, Jon and I took our 40-minute trek Down Under — via a TV studio in downtown DC.

Here’s the video segment from Today:
.

It was definitely an odd experience, as we were not able to see hosts Lisa and Karl as we talked to them. We heard them through earpieces, but I think the visual disconnect put a damper on Jon’s normally chatty and effusive personality. And the question about House of Cards threw me off (as you could see). My initial thought was that they had ended our segment and moved on, not making any connection between a kid’s lunch notes and the very adult TV series.

Yet all-in-all, it was an awesome way to end an unbelievably awesome week, and I was really glad to have my son with me for part of the experience.

Here are a few behind-the-scenes shots of our Australian adventure.

Jon decided to get all his chatting out of the way BEFORE we were on camera.

Over the last seven days, I’ve gotten a lot of wonderful feedback, praise, and ego-stroking. But my favorite comment came from the photo editor from the UK’s Daily Mail — a publication known for embracing the most sensational (and often terrible) news of the day:

I think what you’re doing for your son is really great. In this business I deal with a lot of horrible stuff all the time, so working on a story like this made my week.

And probably the most common remark I’ve read or heard this past week has been about how lucky my son is, with one commenter stating succinctly:

Cool dad, lucky kid.

I appreciate the sentiment, but I’m pretty sure they got that backwards.

Brent, this is such a cool idea. It’s amazing how a little extra effort on our parts as dads benefit our kids greatly. It’s a great lesson that you showcased your gift of drawing and graphics to make your son feel special. I don’t think the rest of us should feel any less of a parent. We all have gifts, maybe not drawing. The question is… will we attempt to use our gift to better our relationship with our kids? I will.
