Fridge Wisdom

October 1, 2011 | By Brent Almond | MAKING MEMORIES

I had an idea a while back* — inspired by my blog’s masthead — to spell witty (and hopefully sometimes wise) things on the fridge using the magnet letters we seem to be accruing at an alarming rate (we’re up to 3 sets). As with any idea that requires more than me sitting on my ass at the computer, it took a while to get around to it. But at long last here I am, presenting my first installment of…

As I was playing around with this, I decided there needed to be some rules to keep it interesting (for me at least) and from getting out of control. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:

1. I can only spell words using the magnets I currently own (no Photoshopping in additional “T”s if I want to spell “temper tantrum” and only have one).

2. I can, however, manipulate letters to form different letters. (The “d” in “Fridge” is a “P” turned on its head)

3. I can use other, non-letter magnets – if needed – to spell a word. (See Starbucks magnet above)

Okay, that’s enough for now. And I’m sure that’s WAY more interesting than you were expecting… But please feel free to make suggestions on how to make this more fun for me and anyone who happens to have read this far down…

Moving on… As I was attempting this first Fridge Fotoshoot and JJ was intermittently snatching the letters and running into the living room, I realized that the smaller set of letters were quite the…

Luckily (as you can see from the gargantuan “H” above) we have a larger set, that in terms of getting lodged in my toddler’s gullet are…

Except that the larger letters are heavier, and start sliding down the fridge and onto the floor where they are sure to be either a) kicked under the fridge to be lost for eternity and making my task of espousing Fridge Wisdom that much more difficult, or b) eaten by the dog. So I amend my last bit of wisdom to say the larger letters are only a…

Alrighty, that’s it for now! But I just got a new set of letters I’m excited to add to the mix, so stay tuned for more…

(*While poking around the internets a while back, networking amidst the sea of daddy blogs, I found this. Damn. I debated a while whether to pursue my own magnet letter postings or not, wanting to avoid any whiff of plagiarism. I knew my idea was independently birthed, but I did go ahead and email this other dad blogger to give him a head’s up/ask his blessing. I never heard back, so hopefully it’s all good in bloggerland.)
